Abbot Wins IHSA Musky State Championship

Five teams competed October 14 in the fourth annual IHSA Musky Tournament sponsored by the Shawnee Muskie Hunters Chapter of Muskies Inc., with two muskies being caught.

High schools that participated included: Marion Central Catholic from Woodstock, Hinckley-Big Rock, Neuqua Valley from Naperville, East Peoria, Morton, and Marmion from Aurora.

There were two boats that caught muskies. At 8:40 a.m., Cole Abbot from Marmion High School caught a 36-inch musky, and about a half-hour later Aiden Savitski of Hinckley Big Rock High School boated the second fish, also a 36-incher.

Conditions were difficult with upper 80-degree air temperatures and no further muskies were boated. In case of a tie, the first and second place winners are determined by time of catch, making Cole Abbot the 2017 state champion of the Illinois High School Muskie Tournament, with Savitski placing second.

The third-place team was determined by a coin flip between Morton High School and Marian Central Catholic High School, both of which caught a 16-inch bass during tournament hours, with Morton winning the toss.

Next year’s IHSA tournament will be held October 13, 2018.

Larry's real issue was that thick layer of ice that hadn't receded yet.
