Just got my bill the other day to order this years bait. I am a little curious as to why the bait is being manufactured by Dick Gries tackle two years in a row.
I find it hard to believe with all of the different baits and manufacturers out there that we would be doubling up in consecutive years.
Any idea what the color pattern will be on the 2012 Collectible lure?
Choosing the collectible lure is an inexact science. Yes, there are lots of manufacturers, but how many lures are available today that have been around for a while and have some history? That is a huge consideration. How can a lure be considered collectible if few people have heard of it, or it's a relatively new bait?
Also, "plugs," especially wooden topwaters and jerkbaits, have value among collectors much more so than spinners/bucktails. We could certainly do a soft plastic, but what happens when the oils from the lure soak into the box? (Having full-color boxes printed in limited quantities, BTW, is EXTREMELY expensive.) Will a soft plastic lure even be in a presentable state in 20 years, or will the colors have faded or blended? Will the lure turn white as the lead inside it oxidizes?
The Striker (2011's lure) and the Topkick were designed by Dick Gries about 25 years ago and were extremely popular. After Dick sold the company, these lures were available for only a short period because the new owner died. The rights to the Gries baits were purchased by Smity Bait in 2011. So, we had the chance to bring back special editions of two very popular lures that had not been available for 14-15 years ... what's wrong with that?

I 2nd the Nimmer line of baits, while not 25 yr old classics, definitely works of art! He won the vote at the Wi musky show for hand made lures amoung some real stiff competition. My guess is they'd be collectables.
Kinda makes the Wades Hoggler look like a knock off, Luv the Hoggler.

I agree Steve, you would not want any rubber baits for the reasons you mentioned. Some baits I would like to see considered would be;

Jakes
Ernies
Phantom
Bagley B-flat (old style with brass hardware)
Any of Jack Cobb's baits
Hughes River
Slammer drop belly
Grandma (old style)
Bucher Topraider
