Rod holder installation - Fiberglass boat

    Hi gang,

I have always had aluminum boats. I had installed a lot of rod holders on them.

Now I bought a fiberglas boat, and I'm not sure what to do. I'm a little more hesitant to just start hogging holes in and permanently mounting them all over.

It's an older Nitro that is in nice shape. I was thinking of installing the "Ranger style rail" that Cabela's sells and mounting them on that..

Any thoughts or suggestions? (Other than junking my Nitro)

Install a rail. That way you can move them around as needed without adding a lot of holes.

    Thanks for the input, Luna.

Do you have any experience with the Cabela's rail? I'm also wondering if anybody has ever installed them (or had them on their boat) and wished that they weren't there, and why?

I put Cabelas rails on my last Ranger. They worked fine. New Ranger came with rails.

On my Nitro I did my own, taped off the place I planned on drilling to stop chipping. Salties come in a model that will bolt through the glass. It was alittle hard with big hands but we got it on. I also put on some orca's by scotties and have caught 2 50's on them with the drag tightned right down so they can handle the stress. Orca's are easier to remove and get in the way less.

Not sure if it will work on a Nitro but check out Jimz Rod Mountz...no drilling needed! I know they fit Ranger boats but not sure about Nitro.
