    Lakes "Turning Over"

I'm hearing alot about lakes "turning over". I'm also hearing alot of different definitions on what it means and how it affects the fishing.

    Figured I ask here...

What is happening what a lake turns?

How does it affect the Muskies?

    RE: Lakes "Turning Over"

I believe most of the lakes are done turning over. Locally (Northcentral WI), I saw it happening about 3 weeks ago.

    >>>>What is happening what a lake turns?

It happens when the surface of the lake be comes denser and heavier from the cooling of the lake (normally about mid-50s) mixes with the water below the thermocline. Most times this water below the thermocline can not hold fish due to poor oxygen content. When a lake flips, the upper layer which has oxygen, mixes throughout the entire lake.

    >>>How does it affect the Muskies?

The muskies at this time can go anywhere, deep shallow, and everywhere in between. They are not limited to the area above the thermocline. Some even say that this flipping causes some "disorientation" of muskie at this time.
