OK OK here is another Abu Garcia question

I do appreciate all those that responded to my last question. THere were alot of mixed reviews about the Abu Record. So what would you all recommend then for a Abu reel in the $100 range that I would be using on a 7'6" shimano rod that can handle lures in the 2-6oz range.

That is what I was looking to do with the Record 60. A buddy of mine here said that I could get something cheaper and that the Record was a little overkill for what I am going to use the setup for.

So please give me your honest opinion on a Abu reel that is in the $100. Could be something completely different than a Abu.

It is just that the reel I will be buying I have to get it off of Amazon as I have money sitting in my account there that needs to be used up.

Thanks again for any help I can get.

    Mike

The C3 has 3 bearings and the C4 has 4 bearings. I like the C3 because it is a push button release, whereas the C4 is a thumb bar. The C3 is 5.3:1 and the C4 is 6.3:1. Other than those differances they are mechanically the same. I actually mod mine out to what would be called a C6 if it existed. I add a dual bearing levelwind and a idler cog with a bearing along with a few other goodies.

Edit: It looks like Amazon has them for $98.50 and free shipping. :D

If I read you correctly, you are looking for any muskie reel that lists for about $100, Abu Garcia or other brand.
I have an Abu 6500C3 and am satisfied with it. It isn't great, but for the money, it works. You might also look at the Shimano Corvalus reel. It lists for about what the Abu 6500C3 does, and they are both under $100 in cost.

Ken, I end up doing my reels the same way that you do.....

Some of the reels I drop the ceramic pawl in first, then later on I upgrade to the dual bearing levelwind.

I also prefer the push button over the thumb bar...

I like my C4 for Suicks and such...just picking up the slack line. Otherwise the C3 is best. I have a Record....the fit, finish, and feel are probably superior to the C3, but it's needed repairs several times when very new with little use. For me the Record has been less reliable than a cheaper C3. Go figure....

I like the faster ratio for picking up slack when jerking too. It's also nice for burning smaller bucktails.

The thumb bars just gets in the way while thumbing the spool. I have successfully removed them on a couple reels already. One I changed to a standard frame and the other I just left the small hole, carefully Dremeled a notch in the side plate and put in the normal push button. Here is a picture of the 6600 SSC3 that I did for my brother for last Christmas, notice the push button in the after.

the power handle is $14 well spent, esp with glove/mitten weather.

Have a couple Record 60's and they all went into the shop for repair in less than a year but I used them more than just frequently. Also, to take into consideration is how much your going to fish with those reels throughout the year. Like the other posters have said you might want to go with the 6500C3 sometimes the new and improved more expensive reel models = more generic plastic parts. Bought a Shimano Calcutta 400B and haven't had one issue with it but you know what they say time is the tell all.
