Rod for Trolling BIG Baits? -- Suggestions please

    Hi Guys,

If I want a rod that will withstand the punishment of trolling 14 inch Jakes, 13 inch Grandma's, Hookers, Legend plows, Big Believers, Talonz, etc what should I be using?

Do I need different eyes on the rod so that the superbraid doesn't abuse the eyes with the constant friction?

Thanks in advance for any advice,
    "Jackpot" John Schroeder

I had Thorne Bros. build one for me that can handle the big baits like Legend Plows, Franky Baits, etc... About 200 bucks. Been great for me for the last 2 years. Not sure about the guide requirements. Hope this helps.

Tooth tamer makes a great glass rod for Trolling 8'length, 13-3/4" handle, 11 eyes and is Hvy/Fast. I have been using this rod for 6 years before Bill Bought the company and it has done a great job for me. In Ohio we have a heavy dose of trolling as well as all the trips up to Lake St. Clair. I pull everything from DB4s to big Grandmas/Jakes with Shimano 80H TDRs running 50# PowerPro. I am sure there is nicer but its cheap and effective for my purposes.

I've been using a 9' Custom built by Frank Bottiglieri of Frank's Custom Rods. The rod is built on a Calstar saltwater blank and is the most versatile rod I own. I use it for trolling big stuff, casting monster rubber and during my last stint in 'Sconnie, as a sucker rod. A perfect blend of glass/graphite and is an absolute rocket launcher casting big rubber. It was also phenomenal trolling rod on Mille Lacs using 14" Jakes and 13" Believers and was able to "break their face" when setting the hook sucker fishing deep water(20'+).

8 foot St. Croix Classic Cat rod or something similar. I'd go fiberglass. Maybe give the Shimano TDR a shot.

Bass Pro Shops Big Cat rod. I am running 40# monel wire on it pulling Talonz Deep Threats and 12" Franky Bait. Of course I haven't gotten a fish doing it yet. ;(

Sorry it isn't a Big Cat rod, but rather a Cat Maxx rod.
