RE: Why Is There A Sucker Shortage?

big jump in the last 2-3 yrs? I think it's typically been 5 or more the last 5 yrs most bait stores... so it's a few bucks more...divide that by 2 guys...so an extra 1.50 each....if you buy 10 it now...

    RE: Sucker Hookset

so it was 50"+ ey Travis? ;-)

I prefer to have the fish swimming directly away from me..ideally setting the hooks with the fish 7-10 feet or so out from the boat...
    hooks typically find the side...
  5. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

not knocking it...don't need to try it... one wouldn't use a rig w fluoro on the hook section and two, would prefer 2 hooks to increase hookups....
your data is flawed to some degree though as I...
  6. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

imo you don't know they wouldn't have hit them..sorta like going thru a buffet line..if there is only 1 kind of pizza and you're hungry, you eat it.if there are 10 kinds you might pick a few...
  7. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

fished 4.5 hours saturday and had 4 hits on suckers...all the rigs i make myself w 2 hooks and the hook section of 49 strand 175 lb...
what if you ONLY had suckers out with 1 or 2 hooks....hard to...

best sucker fishing weather is when they are active... ;o)
in all seriousness I've had days with 10 hits on suckers in 1 day when it was calm and sunny and other 10 fish days when it was cloudy and...

    RE: Hansen Sucker Harness

so John makes the Hulcano rig and now the Hanson rig..how are they different?
  11. Poll: RE: "RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?"

    they were 4/0
  12. Poll: RE: "RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?"

I think you should run 1 of mine with 2, 3/0s and your 1 single hook rig for Oct and Nov and see how the results pan out... ; )
  13. Poll: RE: "RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?"

    so what makes more sense?
using a 1 hook rig and getting more hits but not hooking/landing as many.(you said your percentage isn't so hot)

    OR:

using a 2 hook rig and hooking more...?

    i...

  15. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

not really...maybe I should... I do what has been working well and have tinkered with placement and the rigs enough to think the way we place them and the rigs themselves are pretty solid.. could...
  16. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

always and never are pretty strong statements in any post ....
I will start taking pictures of chewed up suckers to show that they don't "always" have the belly in...just last weekend we boated 6 of...

    RE: sucker rods and rigs

good post...bottom line use what you have confidence in..I only use 130 or 150 lb braid as I don't have confidence in anything less.
do whatever works and produces results.. ;0)
  18. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

guess I tend to disagree a little on the way they hold them as I have lifted plenty of fish up to see how they have them before setting the hook ...often times the fishes belly is down in the bottom...
  19. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

yes, upper left side...I have my reasons and theorys...some studies have suggested muskies are right eye dominant...video of muskies striking baits being trolled where I think it was 65 or 70% of the...
  20. Poll: RE: How does a musky typically (majority of the time) grab a sucker, or any other large forage species?

from my experience they grab them differently at times than other times...i know there are times where for whatever reason, whether it's the water temps, weather or just their activity level they...

    RE: sucker rod

I guess in my honest opinion running 50 lb fluoro either on the reel or on the rig is too....if the drag is cranked down and you set the hook on a big fish that 50 lb can and will break. Period....
