View Full Version : New Musky Fisherman, Technique question

I have been fishing for musky in the New River, VA for about 3 months now. I went on a guide trip and we had one hook up for about 2 seconds which spat the hook. I've also noticed my rapala crankbait has a curved path of marks around the first treble. Today I went out and we had one bite, it slammed my firetiger hellhound about 10' from the boat and 6" below the surface. It was literally on the bait for half a second. We went back over to that area and couldn't get him to rise again. That excitement made the trip worthwhile and gave me confidence about the retrieve. I can feel myself getting closer to catching one of these things, but I just haven't managed it yet.

Is there any special tricks to keeping them on the bait long enough or does one just need the reflexes of a cat? Maybe super gluing a scented soft plastic squirrelly tail will entice him to stay for a moment longer?

Thanks for the advice,
