Grant & Thomas Win PMTT Vitaminerals Spring Shootout

With summer-like air and water temperatures and post-spawn conditions, 110 teams traveled to Morehead, Kentucky, to fish the Professional Musky Tournament Trail’s Vitaminerals Spring Shootout on Cave Run Lake April 29-30.

The top three teams in the PMTT Cave Run qualifier include, from left: front — first place team of Tony Grant and Gregg Thomas; back — third place team of David Johnson and Chris Haley; second place team of Scott Popowski and Jeremy Burris.

Longtime local musky guides Tony Grant of Frenchburg and Gregg Thomas of Morehead caught two muskies to hold on to first place by two points and win the tournament. Though they’ve won several other PMTT events in past years, a victory on their home waters had eluded them until this season.

Their first musky, a 42-incher, was relating to a weedbed where Thomas had been catching fish during the prior week with clients. The second fish — a 48 1/4-inch monster — was caught trolling deep timber with 10-inch crank baits, and stood as the largest of the tournament.

With the win, Grant and Thomas received two beautiful trophies and a payout of $17,000 cash.

In second place were Jeremy Burris of Elgin, Illinois, and Scott Popowski of South Elgin, Illinois, who caught three muskies measuring 44 1/4, 35 and 34 1/2 inches as they jigged tubes over 15 to 20 feet of water.

Placing third were Dave Johnson of Cox’s Creek, Kentucky and Chris Haley of Hazard, Kentucky, who caught 43- and 35 1/2-inch muskies while casting to lay-down trees and brush piles in the main lake.

In fourth place were the father-son team of Dan and Alec Germann of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, who netted and released two muskies of 41 and 31 1/2 inches. They caught one musky while trolling crankbaits and the other twitching a 6-inch crankbait. In fifth place were the Michlig brothers, Matt from Milwaukee and Ben from Minocqua, Wisconsin, who trolled Medussas in the Licking River to catch two muskies that measured 37 3/4 and 31 1/4 inches.

Gregg Thomas and Tony Grant show off their big fish of the tournament, a 48 1/4-incher.

Tournament anglers caught 22 muskies on Saturday and 11 more on Sunday for a total of 33 total fish. Many of the muskies were caught from deeper areas, either jigging or trolling.

Tournament Director Tim Widlacki thanked all the PMTT’s great sponsors, especially Vitaminerals for sponsoring the tournament and Morehead Tourism for hosting the event. He also thanked Ranger Boats, Mercury Marine, Musky Hunter magazine, Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce, Keyes Outdoors, Musky Mayhem Tackle, Chaos Tackle, Muskies Inc. and all the associate and contributing sponsors.

The PMTT will next be in Eagle River, Wisconsin, June 24-25 for the Mercury Marine Summer Challenge. For more information, visit www.promusky.com or call (815) 478-4092.
