Three ‘First Muskies’ Highlight University Of Esox School

Three muskies that were the first-ever caught by the fishermen were the highlight of the University of Esox Summer Musky Tactics School held June 10-12.

The annual event, which drew 23 anglers from five states, was held at St. Germain Lodge and the adjoining Fibber’s Restaurant. In all, 10 muskies were caught by students and staff.

“We had a bunch of enthusiastic musky hunters attend the event,” said Musky Hunter Editor and TV show host Jim Saric, who emceed the school. “We had a huge thunderstorm blow through before we started fishing the first day, so we dealt with post-frontal conditions the entire time. However, everybody worked hard and we caught some nice fish.”

Last Christmas, Alex Nawrocki purchased attendance at the school as a present for his father, Andy, and his dad responded by catching a 43-incher on a 10-inch Jake while fishing with Saric. The fish was Andy Nawrocki’s first musky and proved to be the largest of the entire school.

Nawrocki, who lives in Mokena, Illinois, ended up winning both the school’s Big Fish and Top ’Lunge awards. The latter award goes to the fisherman who catches the most muskies, but no student caught more than one fish during the weekend.

Joey Regiro, of Tinley Park, Illinois, caught his first musky, a 42-incher, on a Medussa. Also boating his first musky was Brad Boelkow of Spring Grove, Illinois, with a 37-incher on a Mepps Musky Marabou.

Other students who caught muskies included Keith Mattison of Wilmington, Ohio, who caught a 38-incher on a ShallowRaider; Richard Storch of Verona, Wisconsin, with a 38-incher on a Shallow Invader; Chad Burress of Eagle Grove, Iowa, with a 38-incher on a 10-inch Jake; and Dave McCarthy of Appleton, Wisconsin, with a 35-incher on a bucktail.

The school featured eight hours of seminars wrapped around fishing. Others serving as instructors were Musky Hunter Managing Editor Steve Heiting as well as guides Rob Manthei, Doug Smith, and Kevin Schmidt.

“It was a terrific weekend,” said Heiting. “Our students were a fun group to be with, and the lodging and food at St. Germain Lodge and Fibber’s Restaurant were excellent, as always. They really take care of us.”
