Larry Ramsell is Musky Hunter’s research editor. He has been involved in musky fishing on all levels for a long time and has fished muskies for over 50 years. Included in those years are hundreds of muskies caught, including dozens of trophy
sized fish both caught and released, topped off by his three 45-pound class releases (one of which was 57 inches long), and a kept 44-pound 4-ounce trophy in 1988 which is a line class world record. His musky hunting has carried him to most of north America’s big fish waters.
Larry was one of the original directors of Muskies, Inc., served two terms as president of that organization and is a member of M.I.’s Hall of Fame. In the state of Illinois, Larry was one of the charter directors of Project Illini, a non-profit organization founded to promote and stock muskies in Illinois, was one of the original directors of the Illinois Muskie Clubs Alliance, and was a member of Project Green Gene.
He also originated and developed the Fresh Water World Records Program of the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame and was inducted as a "Legendary Angler" in 2003. For 16 years Larry was a representative with the International Game Fish Association (IGFA).
Larry is well known as the author of the book A Compendium of Muskie Angling History, originally published in 1982, and its revised second edition in 1997. He was also co-editor of the 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 & 2000 Musky Hunters Almanac(s).
Besides Musky Hunter, Larry has contributed to Fish & Fang (Germany), In-Fisherman, Coarse Angler (England), Muskie magazine (50+ contributions over the years), Pike & Muskie, Fishing Facts, Fishing World, Fins & Feathers and Ontario Angler & Hunter.
A frequent speaker at seminars, sport shows, banquets and Muskie’s, Inc. chapters, Larry has multiple years musky fishing guide in northern Wisconsin. He served for 4 1/2 months as a volunteer working on Dr. Bernard Lebeau’s doctoral thesis field work team in northwestern Ontario in 1986.
Larry also helped found the Professional Musky Tournament Trail and served as the president and executive director.
