Minnesota DNR night at Twin Cities Muskies Inc January 9, 2018

State agencies have installed acoustic receivers in the Saint Louis River system. Cooperative agencies have installed transmitters in many species of fish to follow fish migration in the system, and in and out of Lake Superior. Erin Schaeffer has been examining the Saint Louis River fish migration data accumulated by these receivers. Come hear Erin as she gives the first talk anywhere on this exciting data.

Following Erin, Andrew Scholten of the Waterville Fish Hatchery will talk about some exciting new developments in muskie rearing that have allowed the DNR to raise its full quota of muskies in 2017. Did you know: The DNR has internal technical panels where DNR employees like Andrew, who is an avid muskie fisherman, can share and advocate for their favorite species? Why it may be important to refill drainable ponds with filtered water? Why trophy lakes are seldom numbers lakes? Why the Minnesota DNR spreads the rearing over three hatcheries? Why raising muskie fry to fingerling size by clubs and private rearers is usually less productive than the DNR. How our Twin Cities Muskies Inc and the H.C. Becker Foundation have helped the DNR?

(I have a Swiss Army Knife that saved over 100 muskies that were then stocked into White Bear Lake. Some of those muskies were 30 inches long.)
